How to make sure the ATS can read your resume
"Beating the ATS" does not mean hidden text, copied job descriptions, or skills you do not have. It means making your real fit easy to detect.
- Run the plain-text test. Copy the whole resume into a plain text editor. Contact details should appear, headings should be recognisable, and dates should stay paired with the right employers. If columns interleave, simplify the layout.
- Follow the requested file type. Many systems accept DOCX and text-based PDF, but check the instructions. Never upload a scanned image. Keep both versions ready.
- Check pre-filled fields. When an application auto-fills from your resume, review every field and correct parsing errors.
- Answer screening questions consistently. Work authorisation, location, years of experience, and degree questions can filter you out before anyone reads the resume. Never change facts to pass a screen.
- Use role language honestly. If you wrote a PRD, call it a PRD, not "notes." If the posting says "customer discovery" and you did user research, the posting's phrasing is fine.
